Pocola looks good in first football scrimmage of 2011 preseason

August 23, 2011

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians had their first scrimmage of the preseason Friday night at John Carter Field facing the Gore Pirates. They did not dissappoint, finding the end zone three times to only the Pirates' one.
The Indian defense came out fired up, causing three turnovers in Gore's first 20 plays, highlighted by Dakota Highley's interception on the fifth play of the scrimmage. In fact, the Pirates only gained six yards in their first 10 plays.
After Gore's only score of the scrimmage, the Indians got the passing game on track when quarterback Devon Johnson hit Colton Hamm for a 70-yard touchdown catch. Johnson also added a 13-yard TD run later in the series.
“I was proud of how the kids got after it, the enthusiam coming out,” Pocola Coach Rick Lang said. “We gave up one play defensively, and it was a little fluke — the ball got tipped. But we came back and marched the ball 75 yards down the field and scored, and I am happy about that.”
