It really was not a matter of if, but when Poteau High School graduating senior baseball player Wilson Klutts was going to sign a letter of intent. That date was Monday afternoon at the Poteau High School lobby when he signed to play college baseball with Northeastern Oklahoma State University.
There was one major factor why the Poteau graduate chose the Tahlequah institution.
“I had other colleges looking at me, but they showed the most interest in me,” Klutts said. “I want to go to a college that wants me. I wanted to go to the college that showed the most interest in me. I didn't want to go to a college and sit on the bench.”
That in turn, led Klutts to have a good feeling that he will get to play very early on in his collegiate career.
“There's a possibility that I'll get to play some as a freshmen,” he said. “They've talked a bit about possibly red-shirting me.”
His Poteau coach for the last four years, Ronnie Sockey — who last month resigned to take the softball coaching job at Greenwood (Ark.) High School — said that there is no doubt Klutts will be successful at the next level.
“He's a guy who will work at it,” he said. “He's going to help the team out. He's a team player. He's going to be a great asset for Northeastern.”
While at Poteau High School, Klutts played football and basketball. At NSU, it will just be baseball, which Sockey said will make him even better than he is now.
“Since he's just focusing on one sport, I think his potential is great,” Sockey said. “I think he'll do great at the next level.”
