Poteau Lady Pirate basketball player Kaitlan Standridge went to participate in the United States Junior National Basketball Team tryouts on May 20 at Lighthouse Sports Complex in Oklahoma City. The goal was to make the cut from across the nation to be invited to play in next week's U.S. International Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. She did just that.
“I really didn't think this would happen,” Standridge said. “I have never really foreseen myself coming this far in basketball. I've developed a love for the game of basketball like I have over the past two years.”
Last season, Standridge led Poteau with an 11.8 points-per-game average for the 8-20 Lady Pirates who got to the Class 4A Area Tournament and three wins from a state-tournament appearance. She had an average of 6.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists. She had 12 block shots and 37 steals.
In her freshman season, Standridge averaged 6.6 points a game, 1.9 rebounds and an assist a game during Poteau's 9-15 season. She had a blocked shot and 26 steals.
Standridge, who is leaving this weekend for Columbus, knows she will be involved in the biggest basketball spectacle in her young life to this point.
“It's a big honor to be able to go play in front of all those people,” she said. “It will be the biggest basketball thing I will have ever done.”
