When new Poteau football coach Greg Werner arrived, his senior son, Jay, was going to be part of the Pirates' team as a tight end and a deep snapper. However, the gridiron isn't the only place Jay's presence is going to be felt.
Werner excels on the pitching mound as he did on the football field. The Poteau senior pitcher struck out 13 batters and tossed a one-hitter as the Pirates blanked the Roland Rangers 8-0 in a five-inning, run-ruled game Thursday at Town Creek Park.
