Poteau boys golf coach named Region 6 Coach of the Year; ‘Mud Duck’ Junior Golf Camp June 18-20

May 16, 2013

MIKE THOMAS

For Poteau Pirates golf coach Mike Thomas, it took nine years, but his Coach of the Year recognition finally came.
Thomas was named the 2013 Region 6 Boys Golf Coach of the Year as he helped guide the Pirates to a sixth-place finish at the Class 4A State Tournament earlier this month. Sophomore Cody Shore was fourth at state individually.
“It really means a lot,” said Thomas, who has been coaching the boys golf team since 2004. “It’s the first time in golf I’ve had the honor of being Coach of the Year. It’s voted on by the other coaches in the region. I’ve been Coach of the Year in the other sports I’ve coached, except golf — until now. I’ve been Coach of the Year in basketball, baseball and softball, and this was the only one where I hadn’t been Coach of the Year.”
This year’s Mark Sullivan “Mud Duck” Junior Golf Camp will be June 18-20 at Choctaw Country Club. The entry fee is $20. The accompanying Mark Sullivan “Mud Duck” Junior Golf Tournament will be June 24 at Choctaw Country Club.
