If the Poteau Pirates baseball team wants to make the Class 4A State Tournament next week, it will take a three-game winning streak over the next two days.
On Day 1 of the Class 4A Regional Tournament at Town Creek Park on Wednesday, the Pirates split a pair, beating Broken Bow 15-5 Wednesday morning, but losing 5-0 to Byng that afternoon.
The Pirates (27-8) will need to win twice Thursday, and then prevail on Friday to win the regional and make state. One more loss will end their season.
The other Pirates team in the regional, from Byng (25-6), is only a win from state. Before shutting out host Poteau, the Byng Pirates edged the Muldrow Bulldogs 2-1 earlier Wednesday.
The losers of the first two games, Muldrow (21-10) and Broken Bow (22-12), played an elimination game late Wednesday.
Poteau will play the winner of that game at 4 p.m. Thursday.
