FORT GIBSON — The Poteau Pirates basketball team failed to get hardware in the Class 4A District Tournament on Feb. 22. The Pirates made sure they got some in the regional tournament Saturday afternoon as they beat the Muldrow Bulldogs 55-39 to win the consolation championship and advance to this week's Class 4A Area Tournament at the Wilburton High School Gym, where they will meet the Ada Cougars at 3 p.m. Thursday in the consolation quarterfinals. Three wins will get the Pirates to the state tournament.
The Pirates stayed alive Friday afternoon with a 50-36 win over another conference rival, Sallisaw.
The Lady Pirates suffered their first playoff loss of the season, falling 75-35 to the No. 1 team in the state, the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers, in Saturday night's regional final.
The Lady Pirates find themselves in the same spot they were in two years ago — three wins from making state. Poteau will meet McLoud Lady Redskins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Class 4A Area Tournament consolation quarterfinals in Wilburton.
