The Poteau Pirates baseball team had quite a season this spring under first-year coach Andy Perdue. They won 29 games to set a school record, as well as setting team records in at-bats (1,000), runs scored (280), hits (341), runs batted in (215), doubles (77), sacrifice bunts/flies (47), walks (145) and stolen bases (149). The Pirates won the 32nd LeFlore County Tournament, won the Class 4A Regional Tournament and got to within a victory of the state tournament — losing 10-0 to Byng in the winner-take-all regional final on May 6 at Town Creek Park.
Coming as a complete surprise, the veteran coach was named the 2013 Southeastern Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association Coach of the Year.
“It was something that was very unexpected,” Perdue said. “I’m sitting there next to [Red Oak] coach Trey Booth, who just won his seventh straight state championship, and I get elected as Coach of the Year. It was very gratifying, and it was a nice end to a great season. Any coach will tell you it’s not the Xs and Os, it’s the Jimmys and Joes — it’s the players.”
To top it off, Perdue will coach not only one of the North All-Star Teams in Wednesday night’s All-Star Game Tryout at 7 p.m. at McAlester’s Mike Deak Field, he had two of his players — Jay Werner and Blake Johnson — make the team.
