When the final three football games of the season were approaching, the Poteau Pirates knew that they had to go 3-0 to make the playoffs.
The Pirates took care of the first game, a 41-21 win over Muldrow on Oct. 18 at Costner Stadium.
“We played real well,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. “Muldrow is a team that's played a lot of people close. It felt good to get that one out of the way, and get back to our winning ways. Hopefully, we can get on a roll again. We're beat up, but we're ready to go.”
Now, the Pirates will try to take care of the second game of the three-game set of must-win contests at 7:30 tonight as they travel to meet the Broken Bow Savages in a District 4A-4 game at Memorial Stadium.
The Pirates (5-3 overall, 2-3 in district play) must win out to have any shot at making the playoffs.
When Werner was hired last spring as Poteau's new football coach, he and his family knew tonight's game would be a different one than all the other contests this season, as he will face his former players.
“It's going to be weird, and it's going to be tough on me, my wife and [senior tight end] Jay,” he said. “It's something that we're going to have to deal with. Fortunately, it's just a one-time thing, but it is a tough deal. It is what it is, and we're going to have to deal with it.”
