It looked for a while Thursday night that the host Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates were going to make it to Saturday afternoon's championship games of the Poteau Freshmen Tournament, which is taking place at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Lady Pirates did make Saturday afternoon's 2 p.m. championship game against Muldrow as Poteau was too much for the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds in posting a 52-21 victory in Thursday night's semifinal contest. The Lady Bulldogs edged the Wilburton Lady Diggers 36-34 in the other semifinal.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the Pirates. A late Sallisaw rally snatched a Poteau win away as the Black Diamonds prevailed 28-25 in their semifinal contest. The Black Diamonds will face Roland in Saturday afternoon's 3 p.m. title game as the Rangers handled the Muldrow Bulldogs 36-25 in the other semifinal.
Poteau's boys will meet Muldrow at 1 p.m. Saturday for third place.
Saturday's consolation championship games will have LeFlore County teams involved. The boys consolation championship contest will be an all-county one as Heavener will meet Spiro at 11 a.m. Spiro's girls will face Roland at 10 a.m. for the girls consolation championship.
