Poteau freshmen sweep Spiro to earn semifinal game berths

The host Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates freshmen basketball teams won their opening-round games Tuesday night in the Poteau Freshmen Tournament at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Pirates got past the Spiro Bulldogs 42-27, while the Lady Pirates were too much for the Lady Bulldogs in posting a 38-13 victory.
The Poteau teams will play Sallisaw at 7 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) on Thursday in the championship semifinals, with the winners playing for the title at 2 p.m. (girls) and 3 p.m. (boys) on Saturday. Losses will drop them into the third-place games at noon (girls) and 1 p.m. (boys) on Saturday.
Spiro's teams got byes into Saturday's consolation championships, at 10 a.m. (girls) and 11 a.m. (boys).
