Poteau gets several track individuals, relays to state

May 8, 2013

TAHLEQUAH — There will be a good representation of Poteau Lady Pirates and Pirates at this weekend's Class 5A State Meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Yukon High School's Miller Stadium.
Two Lady Pirate relays were regional runners-up at the Class 5A Regional Meet, which took place Saturday — and was finished on Monday due to weather.
Colleen Peterson, Brittany Fox, Kandace Standridge and Latifah Harris were second in the 1,600-meter relay (4:13.29), while Peterson, Deven Bond, Haley Griggs and Standridge were runners-up in the 3,200-meter relay (10:15.12).
Standridge was third in the 800-meter run (2:32.37), while Marissa Smith, Peterson, Brianna Steele and Harris were third in the 800-meter relay (1:51.54).
On the boys' side, Trevor Shankle was regional runner-up in the shot put (48-7.75), and Kendrick Hardaway was third in the 200-meter dash (23.31 seconds) to earn bids to state.
On Tuesday, it was learned that several Poteau track athletes also made state with at-large bids.
For the Lady Pirates, Bond and Skylar Webster made state as individuals. Bond was fourth in the 1,600-meter run (5:48.18) and fifth in the 3,200-meter run (12:34.04), while Webster was fourth in the pole vault (8-0).
For the Pirates, Shankle earned a state berth in his second event, the discus — in which he placed sixth on Monday in the regional meet with a throw of 135-1. Teammate Troy Barnett also made state as his sixth-place finish in the shot put (44-6) at the regional meet was good enough to earn an at-large state berth.
