RED OAK — The Poteau Lady Pirates almost did it the hard way to win the Red Oak Tournament on Friday afternoon — but the key word was almost.
After winning the first title game 4-3 over the host Lady Eagles, Red Oak beat Poteau 9-1 in the second title game to win its own tournament.
The Lady Pirates lost their first game 8-3 to Wister, but beat Pocola 13-2, Wister 10-2, McCurtain 11-1 and Panama 13-0 to reach the championship game.
The Lady Razorbacks started out strong, winning their first two games — 12-4 over McCurtain and 3-2 over Keota. Then, they lost 15-4 to Red Oak before falling in the loser’s-bracket final to Poteau.
After beating Poteau, Wister then lost two straight to be eliminated from the tournament, falling 10-0 to Red Oak before seeing Poteau avenge the earlier defeat at the hands of the Lady Wildcats.
Two other local teams, Pocola and Cameron, both went 0-2. The Lady Indians lost 12-1 to Red Oak before losing to Poteau, while the Lady Yellowjackets lost 15-2 to Keota and 6-5 to McCurtain.
