PANAMA — The title game of the 2011 Lady ’Back Classic was supposed to have been decided Saturday night. It was not — it ended up being decided EARLY Sunday morning.
At 12:55 a.m. Sunday, the Poteau Lady Pirates finally got past the Red Oak Lady Eagles to win the championship. After Red Oak forced the second title game with a 3-0 victory to hand the Lady Pirates their first loss of the season, Poteau responded with a 7-3 win in the second championship game.
The same two teams, who just happened to have met Monday afternoon in Red Oak, played Saturday in the winner's-bracket final, with Poteau edging Red Oak 2-1 in nine innings.
The tournament-host Panama Lady Razorbacks went 1-2 in their final three games. After losing 3-0 to Poteau in Friday night's winner's-bracket semifinals, Panama then beat Pocola 6-1 later that night before losing Saturday's loser's-bracket semifinal 5-3 to Stigler.
Three LeFlore County teams were eliminated on Friday. The Spiro Lady Bulldogs beat Smithville 10-0 and Wister 4-1 before losing 6-4 to Stigler.
The Lady Wildcats went 1-1 on Friday, beating McCurtain before losing to Spiro.
The Pocola Lady Indians, who got a forfeited win Friday night over Sallisaw, beat Vian 5-4 before losing to Panama.
