WILBURTON — Finally, the seasons got underway for the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Spiro teams Wednesday at the Wilburton Tournament. All three opened the season victoriously.
After a slow start, the Lady Pirates handled the Hartshorne Lady Miners 60-43 in the first game of the day.
Then, both Spiro teams posted wins against junior varsity teams. The Bulldogs routed the Hartshorne JV 93-12, then the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Wilburton JV 68-18 as the Eufaula Lady Ironheads could not make Wednesday's action as Eufaula Public Schools were still out due to the effects of last week's wintry storm.
Since the Poteau Pirates could not participate in the event, the Spiro JV took their place against Red Oak, and came up on the short end in a 48-20 victory by the Eagles.
All three local varsity teams will play today in the championship semifinals. The Lady Pirates (1-0) will meet the winner of Wednesday night's Stigler-Wilburton game at 7 tonight, while the Lady Bulldogs (1-0) will meet the Red Oak-Wright City winner at 10 this morning. The ’Dogs (1-0) will face the Stigler-Wilburton winner at 8:30 tonight.
The semifinal losers will play for third place at 4 [girls] and 5:30 p.m. [boys] Friday, while the winners will be in the title games at 7 [girls] and 8:30 p.m. [boys] Friday.
