Poteau girls too much for Wright City in Wilburton Tournament opener, but Heavener Wolves, Lady Wolves fall

WILBURTON — The Poteau Lady Pirates wasted little time in taking charge in their opener in the Wilburton Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Poteau got out to a double-digit lead after a period and never looked back as they defeated the Wright City Lady Lumberjax 61-31 to advance to tonight's championship semifinal at 7 p.m. against the winner of Thursday night's Hartshorne-Wilburton game. Tonight's winner will then play for the tournament title at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, while the loser will play in the third-place game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Heavener Wolves suffered a heartbreaking defeat in their opening-round game Thursday afternoon, losing 35-34 in overtime to the Eufaula Ironheads. The Wolves will play a consolation semifinal game against the loser of Thursday's Wright City-Hartshorne game at 11:30 this morning. The winner will advance to the consolation championship game at 1 p.m. Saturday, while this morning's loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
The Heavener Lady Wolves opened the tournament's first day of action by losing 55-29 to the Red Oak Lady Eagles. They will play at 10 this morning against the loser of Thursday's Eufaula-Stigler game in the consolation semifinals. This morning's winner will play for the consolation championship at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, while the loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
The Poteau Pirates played the host Wilburton Diggers Thursday night, with a win putting them into tonight's championship semifinal at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of Thursday's Red Oak-Stigler game. The Poteau-Wilburton loser will play the Red Oak-Stigler loser at 2:30 today in the championship semifinals, with the winner getting a shot at the consolation championship at 1 p.m. Saturday. Today's 2:30 p.m. loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
