Poteau girls win third straight district title; Pirates fall short, lose to Stilwell Indians
Saturday night's Class 4A District Tournament title game at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse was the third time the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Stilwell Lady Indians played this year. Even though the Lady Indians played Poteau closer in the second outing, the third time was not a charm for Stilwell. The Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead and never allowed their lead to dwindle to less than seven points as they won their third district championship in a row with a 49-40 victory. The Lady Pirates (17-7) will meet Fort Gibson at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Fort Gibson. The winner will play for the regional title at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and will automatically qualify for next week's area tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center.Just as it was for the Lady Indians, third time was not a charm for the Pirates, either. For the third time in as many outings this season, the Indians proved to be too much for the Pirates as Stilwell won the boys district title game 55-43.The Pirates (12-12) will play an elimination game against Jay at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Fort Gibson, and must win three games in three days to advance to next week's area tournament.
