CATOOSA — Monday was a fun day for Addie Guthrie, and somewhat of a sneak preview, too.
The recent Poteau High School graduate and standout golfer got to play one last round of her prep career on Monday's All-State Golf Tournament at Cherokee Hills Golf Course.
Guthrie, who played alongside Bristow's Kayla Schroeder for the East Team, finished in a 2-2 tie with West duo Sarah Delong of Elgin and Bailey McCann of Anadarko in a Ryder Cup style scoring format.
The Rogers State University-bound player, who is joining the team as a walk-on, enjoyed her experience at All-State.
“Here it is all relaxed,” Guthrie said. “Meeting new people is real fun, plus the rings and jackets you get are pretty cool.”
Guthrie also had the benefit of having her own coach around as Randall Wheat lead the East squad, which won 24.5-23.5 over the West, thanks to the East boys' 15.5-8.5 victory over the West. The West girls won 15-9 over the East.
But the biggest thing for her was getting an idea of what her college experience will be like because Cherokee Hills happens to be the practice course for the Rogers State golf program.
“I’ve never seen this course before this past weekend,” Guthrie said. “The bunker course is a lot longer than the state course (Oklahoma City's Lake Hefner South Golf Course), and it has a very narrow fairway.
Guthrie and her Lady Pirate teammates captured the Class 4A state championship back in May as her teammate, soon-to-be junior Hannah Ward, won the individual state championship.
Cherokee Hills is about 30 minutes away from Claremore, the home of Rogers State, and Guthrie agreed that she also got an idea of what college life will be like.
“I look forward to it,” she said. “I got to meet one of the girls I’ll be playing golf with. It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a bigger city, and a lot of fun.”
Guthrie’s soon-to-be Hillcat teammate is Kelsey Steuver of Washington, who played for the West.
