DURANT — Poteau junior golfer Connor Wheat won his first-ever high school tournament on Friday, winning the Durant Invitational at Silverado Golf Course.
However, Wheat, who shot a 38-39—77, had to go a little extra to win the title. Wheat had to go into a sudden-death playoff, and he won the playoff on the first hole.
Wheat wasn't the only Poteau golfer to place. Cody Shore, who opened the season by winning the Tulsa McLain/TSST Tournament last week in Broken Arrow, was third with a 40-39—79.
As a team, the Pirates were third with a team score of 352. Jarrett Lowrimore shot a 47-47—94, followed by John Scott Sanders (50-52—-102) and Connor Bandy (58-55—113).
“We have to start getting help from our No. 3 and No. 4 golfers,” said Poteau coach Mike Thomas.
The Pirates will hit the links next at the Seminole Invitational, which will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at Jimmie Austin Golf Course.
