SALLISAW — Poteau Pirate golfer Jarrett Lowrimore had to go a little extra in Thursday's Sallisaw Invitational, but it ended up being worth it.
The Poteau sophomore beat Fort Gibson's Wesley Jackson on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff to take home the top medalist prize as each ended regulation play tied at 75. The sudden-death playoff hole was somewhat dramatic.
“Both players made routine pars on the first two holes,” Poteau Boys Coach Mike Thomas said. “On the third hole, a 191-yard, par-3 hole which went over the creek, Jarrett's tree shot hit the middle of the green, and then rolled off the back edge. Wesley's tee shot also hit the middle of the green, and rolled off the back edge. Wesley chipped from about 10 feet behind the green and it ran about six feet past the cup. Jarrett elected to putt his shot from the fringe and rolled it up to about 3.5 feet from the cup. Wesley was farther out (from the cup), so he putted first for his par and missed the putt by about six inches, then tapped in for bogey. Jarrett calmly stepped up and drained his 3.5-foot putt for par and the individual championship.”
As a team, the Pirates actually tied for second with Fort Gibson at 320, but to break the tie for team placing purposes each team had its fifth golfer's score count, and Poteau's (90) was better than Fort Gibson's (95). Thus, Poteau got the second-place plaque. Hilldale won the tournament with a 317.
As for other Pirates, Connor Wheat was eighth-place medalist with a 78. John Scott Sanders carded an 83, followed by Cody Shore (84) and Trey Wells (90).
“We are really close to shooting between 310 to 315,” Thomas said. “We have really matured a lot since last year, learning to grind it out when we hit a rough patch during a round, and keeping their emotions in check. The rest of the season should be a lot of fun.”
The Pirates will have their own tournament, the Poteau Pirate Invitational, at both Choctaw Country Club and Wolf Ridge Golf Course. Action will begin at both sites at 8 a.m. It will be a unique format, as each golf course will have a different format.
“At Wolf Ridge, our individuals will be paired with other individuals from two or three other teams,” Thomas said. “At Choctaw Country Club, all five team members will play together, and the coach will drop the worst score on each hole. This format allows a coach to work with all five players on every hole, and not have to run back and forth all over the course. It also gives our fans a chance to watch all five players at the same time instead of just one player. We have 22 teams coming, and I would really like to see golf fans in the area come out and follow our players on Monday. Their support would really be appreciated.”
The tournament will sort of be a way to showcase the new things which Choctaw Country Club has to offer.
“We're in the process of getting some new landscaping around the club house,” Choctaw Country Club Pro-Shop Manager Frances Langdell said. “They'll be going on the new cart paths.”
Langdell also said that there will be Tuesday night men's scrambles with dinner afterward and a Ladies League Play on Thursdays, both of which will begin at 5:30 p.m.
The two-day, Spring Three-Player Scramble will be April 14-15. Cost is $45 per player and $120 per team.
The Masonic Lodge Tournament will be at 1 p.m. April 27. For additional information, call the pro shop at (918) 647-3488.
For the month of April, those individuals wishing to join can do so without any initiation fees. For additional information, call the pro shop at (918) 647-3488.
Also, the pool will open May 26, and Langdell said to check out Choctaw Country Club's Facebook page. For those who hit “like,” they will be able to see all specials offered by the Club.
