Poteau has two wrestlers place at Class 4A State Tournament; Pirates finish in ninth place in team standings

February 25, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY — Two Poteau Pirates placed at the Class 4A State Tournament, which took place Friday and Saturday at State Fair Arena.
Senior Tyler Tustin's bid for a three-peat as state champion just missed as he lost his 138-pound state title match 4-2 after winning his first two matches — a 15-0 technical fall quarterfinal victory and a 3-1 semifinal win. He placed second, and ended his career with two state titles, four times placing at state, three times a state finalist, four regional titles and a career record of 168-8.
Devin Anderson, the other Poteau placer, was fourth at 120 pounds. He lost his first match to Mannford's 2012 state runner-up, Kaleb Furr. Anderson then pinned his opponents in the consolation quarterfinals and semifinals before losing again to Furr in the third-place match by a score of 9-5.
Derek Francis, wrestling at 170 pounds, opened with a 5-3 win over Cushing's Daniel Rowell, but then lost by injury default in the semifinals. Francis then lost 6-0 in the consolation semifinals.
Gabe Sanchez lost both of his matches at state, and did not advance into medal-round action for the Pirates, who finished in ninth place.
