Poteau to have big test tonight against Gravette

September 16, 2011

The second Bluebeard and Blackbeard Awards were handed out. Jake McMillin (No. 11) and Kaydon Evans (No. 6) were the Co-Bluebeard Award winners for their offensive performance in last week's rout of Idabel. Troy Barnett (No. 58) was the Blackbeard Winner for his excellent play in the line. The Poteau Pirates football team is off to a 2-0 start after last week's 42-7 win over Idabel, but they will get a stiff test tonight when they welcome the Gravette (Ark.) Lions to Costner Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
“They are very good,” Poteau Coach Jeff Broyles said. “They were 9-1 last year and got beat in the first round (of the playoffs). The year before, they were 8-2 and were defeated in the second round (of the playoffs). They scare us to death. Offensively, they do so many exotic things. Defensively, they'll give us two looks — they'll play with two safeties deep to take away our passing game or they'll bring the house to take away our running game. We're preparing for both. We really don't know what we're going to get — I expect to get a little bit of both. But that's a great thing about the no-huddle offense that I'm enjoying about it is that I can get a look at it (Gravette's defensive package), and then get us into the best situation offensively.”
