The 2011 high school cross country season will begin for the Poteau Lady Pirates and Pirates at 4 p.m. Monday at the Haworth Lions Invitational.
“Monday's meet will still be a preliminary meet,” Poteau Coach Tim Hall said. “The distances won't be quite what we'll run at the regional and state meets. But we're excited and ready to go.”
The Lady Pirates were seventh at last year's state meet.
“On the girls' side, we've got to replace our two-time state qualifier Brenda Felipe (who is running at Rogers State College in Claremore),” Hall said. “Colleen (Peterson, who was 45th at last year's Class 4A State Meet at Edmond's Mitch Park) is the only returner among the top seven. I have some good girls coming out to compete for our other varsity spots.”
As for the Pirates, they were ninth at state in 2010.
“On the guys' side, we're bringing three back from last year's top seven with Nico Hall, Daniel Stacy and Daryl Callaway,” Hall said. We're hoping those three will step up and will be a strong point for us this year.”
Hall was 31st at state last year, Stacy 77th and Callaway 96th.
