Although it's been 63 years between the Poteau Pirates football team's second and third appearances in the state title game, the Pirates are indeed hoping third time will be the charm.
For the first time since coming in state runner-up in 1950, the Pirates (12-1) will once again play for a gold ball this afternoon as they will meet the top-ranked Anadarko Warriors (13-0) for the Class 4A state title at 1 p.m. at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium. The game will be televised live on FoxSports Oklahoma.
“It's exciting,” Poteau second-year coach Greg Werner said. “It's hard for it to sink in that you're still one of the two teams left. It is a big game. We get to play in a big stadium. What a great thrill for our kids.”
