Poteau Lady Pirates win own cross country meet for second straight year; Lady Wolves runners-up; Poteau, Heavener boys second, third, respectively, in Saturday's meet

There was a partial repeat for the Poteau High School cross country teams in their second annual Poteau Pirate Invitational, which took place Saturday morning at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The Lady Pirates repeated as team champion with 29 points, with the other local team, Heavener, coming in second with 44 points.
Five local runners placed in the top 10 in Saturday's two-mile run, led by Poteau's Deven Bond who was runner-up (13:58) to Quinton's Courtney Taylor (13:06). Poteauy's Sheridan Hoyer was third (14:04), Poteau's Colleen Peterson was fifth (14:20), Heavener's Johna Enger was seventh (14:25) and Heavener's Araceli Farias was 10th (14:51).
Heavener's Kaylan Leder (15:23) just nipped Poteau's Samantha Galetka (15:23) by mere hundredths of a second to claim 15th. Heavener's Jazmin Cruz was 18th (15:32), Poteau's Shandee Staton was 19th (15:48), Heavener's Caitlyn Carson was 20th (15:52), Poteau's Tabitha Waldrop was 22nd (15:56) and Poteau's Katie Piquet was 23rd (18:18).
In the boys' 5K run, the Pirates were dethroned as champions from last year by Haworth as the Lions scored 32 points. Poteau was second (47 points), with Heavener third (71).
Three locals placed in the top 10. Poteau's Nico Hall was second (17:59) to Haworth's Chris Pollard (17:43). Heavener's Jose Farias was fourth (18:32), while Poteau's Daniel Stacy was eighth (19:05).
Poteau's Christian Segundo was 11th (19:23), Heavener's Arturo Ortega was 16th (19:53), Poteau's Bobby Graham was 17th (19:54), Heavener's Dakotah McGee was 18th (20:05), Heavener's Cesar Gonzales was 19th (20:20), Poteau's Wesley Reeves was 21st (20:32), Poteau's Will Longenbaugh was 22nd (20:35), Poteau's Daryl Callaway was 23rd (20:39), Poteau's Josh Anderson was 24th (20:50), Poteau's Tyler White was 25th (21:01), Poteau's Hong Siu was 26th (21:16), Heavener's Octavio Sanchez was 28th (21:27), Poteau's Kendall Smith was 33rd (23:10), Poteau's Matt Hinds was 34th (23:23), Poteau's Christian Sanjuan was 35th (23:23), Poteau's Bobby Elkins was 37th (24:08), Poteau's Eric Sanjuan was 40th (25:25) and Poteau's Trey Wells was 41st (26:50).
The day began with an open 5K run, with Poteau's Tom Brennan the overall male winner and Talihina's Vania Williams being the top female runner in the event.
Both local schools' teams will return to action later this week as the Poteau and Heavener runners will participate in the Tulsa Washington Invitational at 3 p.m. Thursday at Tulsa's O'Brien Park.
