Poteau looks sharp in first football scrimmage

August 23, 2011

CATOOSA — The Poteau Pirates hit the road Friday night to take part in a triangular-controlled football scrimmage against the Catoosa Indians, a Class 4A power that made it all the way into the state semifinal last year, and the Class 6A Tulsa Memorial Chargers.
The scrimmages were formatted where each team would face one of the other two teams in a 15-play series.
The Pirates came into this season after suffering through a dismal 3-7 season last year. The Pirates simply had trouble controlling the line off scrimmage on offense, thus they were unable to run the ball with much success and their passing game was marred by the quarterback being under a constant state of harassment and pressure, that caused many sacks and pressured throws.
It was the goal of the Pirates to get stronger and faster in the offensive line, and there was a philosophy change in blocking technique. Due to the return of several skill players and the maturation of others, Poteau has a wide choice of options on the offensive side of the ball, plus the Pirates had a heated battle for the quarterback position between Wilson Klutts and Jace Pitchford. Klutts is a senior and his tenure and senior leadership ability has propelled him into the starting quarterback position. Pitchford will be good before he is finished, but he simply needs to gain experience — plus he is a vital part of the receiving corp at the present time.
You can see a difference in the offensive line and one will be made aware of the very deep skill positions on the Poteau offensive unit. Under the new offensive thinking, the Pirates want to give their QB at least three seconds to stand in the pocket unmolested. Klutts had to scramble once in the scrimmage and that was due to an errant snap. The Pirates will run a spread, and they have at least nine players that will work at receivers. Two players rose to the top of the ladder in the scrimmage. Jessie Woodson and Blake Roley simply ran free all night long. Both made receptions for long TDs and on the last two Poteau offensive plays Roley was severely interfered with in the Catoosa end zone with both being flagged.
