Historic Downtown Poteau: Preserving the Past … Planning for the Future. Downtown Poteau was developed as the business hub of the community in the early 1900s. We still have businesses that have been here since 1896 like Bridgman’s Furniture.
Downtown Poteau was featured in the October 2006 edition of The Oklahoman and featured in the Jan/Feb, 2010 issue of the Oklahoma Today magazine. Poteau became an official Oklahoma Main Street community in 2005. Since then the downtown business owners have reinvested more than $2,112,000 in projects on the historical buildings.
Downtown Poteau is the center of most festivals and events that take place every year. We now have two restaurants, antique stores, up-scaled clothing, gifts, jewelry, beauty boutiques, furniture and other unique retail stores.
We still have our original post office, bank, hardware store, new city hall and police station all located in walking distance downtown.
This year we will have a new streetscape and a new convention center coming downtown. Come to Poteau Main Street to shop, dine, relax and have fun.
