After the Poteau Pirates lost 4-3 to the Texoma Lookouts in the first game of last week's OK Kids Midgets Regional Tournament at the Poteau Area Recreational Area, they knew their backs were against the wall, needing to end the event 5-0 to advance to this week's Midgets State Tournament in Elk City. They did just that.
After beating the Lookouts 7-4 in a game which was delayed by Friday night's rain and did not end until 12:15 a.m. Saturday, the Pirates then beat the Lookouts 9-5 Sunday afternoon at the PARC, since the winner-take-all game was rained out Saturday night, to advance to this week's state tournament.
Poteau beat Silo 6-4 before beating Texoma in the first title game.
In the winner-take-all game, Ben Klutts hit a two-run home run over the left-field fence to make it 2-0 in favor of the Pirates, who never trailed in the game.
After Klutts' homer, he was intentionally walked every other time he came to the plate. He ended the game 1-1 with his two-run homer and a run scored.
Dawson Perry was 2-for-2 with a double, a run batted in and a run scored, while Logan Carroll was 1-for-1 with a run scored for the Pirates.
Jarred Williams got the win, fanning seven batter in three innings, then Klutts pitched the final three innings with four Ks.
In the first title game, the Pirates used a seven-run second inning to take a 7-2 lead, which they never relinquished.
Klutts was 2-for-2 with a run scored, Tyler Singleterry was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Perry was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Rece Ward got the win, striking out four batters.
In the loser's-bracket final against Silo, the Pirates broke a 4-4 tie after Friday's rain delay with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Williams' RBI double scored Dakota Eaves, who got a two-out double, in the fifth inning. Ward's RBI single in the sixth made it 6-4.
The game ended with a double play as Silo tried to mount a game-tying rally in the sixth inning. Ward caught a fly ball for the second out, then threw to shortstop Seth Ryan to force out the runner trying to get back to second base to end the game.
For the game, Ward was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Klutts got the win.
