Poteau Pirates in District 4A-4 showdown Friday night at Fort Gibson

Last week, the Poteau Pirates coaching staff was watching game film of perhaps the last big game the Pirates have been in — their dramatic 15-14 win over Wagoner in 2009 at Costner Stadium with the winning points scoring on a fake extra-point try which was turned into a two-point conversion run. However, tonight is quite likely the biggest football game for Poteau since that night as the sixth-ranked Pirates (5-0, 2-0 in District 4A-4) travel to meet the Fort Gibson Tigers (4-1, 2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.“There's no doubt for every kid playing for us that this is biggest football game they will have ever played in,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “It's a big game for our program, our school and our community. It's a huge ball game for us and them. We're going to have to play really well.”• • •To Get There — Take U.S. 59 north to Sallisaw. Take Interstate 40 west to Muskogee Turnpike.
