The Poteau Pirates football team will conclude its 2012 season at 7:30 tonight at Costner Stadium with a Senior Night game against the Tulsa Rogers Ropers.
Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach, wants to see fans come out to support a team that has made improvements by leaps and bounds.
“The main thing is this, and I've talked to a lot of guys about this — people in town need to understand just how much this team has done, and where they've come from,” he said. “It's unbelievable what they've done. What they've done since May is pretty much nothing short of a miracle — how far they've come. We've played everybody nip and tuck. There's no doubt that we're the best fifth-place team in the state of Oklahoma. I would just love to see people come out and support them because the kids deserve it. I don't know if people know just how much respect they've gained after this season my how much better they've gotten and how hard they've played this year. Look how well we played Cascia Hall, and we had chances to beat Sallisaw and Broken Bow. It's going to be a good night. It's Senior Night, and we just want to win. I couldn't have asked for a better group of seniors my first year here. Our seniors are 14 very fine men, and we want to send the seniors out with a big win — and a win will give us a winning season. A win will give us some momentum going into next season because we're very excited about next year, because we have a chance to be even better.”
