Poteau Pirates get past Wilburton to make semifinals; Heavener teams eliminated from tournament

WILBURTON — It wasn’t pretty, but the Poteau Pirates basketball team won its opening-round game in the Wilburton Tournament 44-40 over the host Diggers on Thursday night.
The Pirates played Red Oak, a 56-43 victor over Stigler on Thursday, in the championship semifinals Friday night with the winner meeting the Wright City-Eufaula winner at 7 p.m. Saturday for the championship. The Poteau-Red Oak loser and the Wright City-Eufaula loser will play for third place at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Lady Pirates played the host Lady Diggers in the semfinals Friday night, with the winner meeting the Red Oak-Eufaula winner for the title at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The losers will meet for third place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Both Heavener teams were in the consolation semifinals on Friday, and both squads saw their stay come to an end.
The Wolves suffered their second straight loss after a 3-0 start as they lost 58-45 to the Hartshorne Miners to be eliminated from the tournament.
The Lady Wolves saw their stay at the tournament come to a close as they lost to former coach, Jeff Walker, and his Stigler Lady Panthers 49-37 in the consolation semifinals to get eliminated from the tournament.
