McALESTER — If the Poteau Pirates football team was going to advance to the Class 4A state championship game, senior quarterback Jace Pitchford would be in the middle of it somewhere — and he was.
Pitchford intercepted a pass that lad to a Poteau touchdown, but perhaps the biggest play of the entire season saw Pitchford stop Oklahoma City Douglass star running back Deondre Clark short of a first down late in the game, then scored the game-winning touchdown with 2:26 left to play in the game. The Pirates ran out the clock, and posted their first semifinal victory in more than six decades as the defeated the Trojans by the score of 27-20 Saturday afternoon at Hook Eales Stadium.
The Pirates (12-1) will meet the Anadarko Warriors, a 34-13 victory the same afternoon at Stillwater High School over the Wagoner Bulldogs, at 1 p.m. Friday at Boone Pickens Stadium on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.
