One big road test down, one more coming tonight for the Poteau Pirates.
The Pirates (1-0), who opened the season last Friday night with a 28-21 road win over the Durant Lions, will have an even bigger test when they travel to meet the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
“Everything about them concerns us,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's new football coach.
“Their quarterback is a great player. They have a lot of good players from top to bottom. They're a Class 7A school (the equivilent of Class 6A in Oklahoma), so they're going to have some of those type of players. What concerns me is that they'll be able to play a lot of kids. They're a good, solid football team. We're going to have to make things happen to beat them.”
To Get There — Take Oklahoma State Highway 112 north to Pocola. Take U.S. 271 north to Fort Smith, Ark., where it becomes Interstate 540. Take I-540 north to Van Buren. Proceed north to U.S. 64. Take U.S. 64 west to Alma Boulevard. Turn right to stadium.
