Poteau Pirates hope to give 'Pointers' to Van Buren tonight
It will be hard to match what happened last Friday night in the season opener for the Poteau Pirates football team. For the second straight year, they rallied from a deficit to down the Durant Lions, this time in double overtime by a score of 43-42 at Costner Stadium.“It was wild,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “It's one of those games that's highly emotional. It was definitely a crazy way to start things.”Such a win can do wonders for a team. Luckily it was the Pirates who won such a contest last week.“I think that kind of a win can do something for us,” Werner said. “It showed us we can come back. We didn't give up. We fought, and that's what it's all about. I was proud of them. Hopefully, it showed a little bit of what we have.”However, that was then, tonight is now as the Pirates (1-0) welcome the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers to Costner Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.• • •The Poteau High School Band Boosters will have a tailgate party beginning at 5:30 p.m. today at Costner Stadium before tonight's game. The tailgate will feature grilled chicken breast sandwiches, chips, a drink and homemade cookies or brownie for dessert. Cost of the tailgate special is $5 per person.
