The Poteau Pirates football team will look to snap a two-game losing streak when they travel to play the Tulsa Webster Warriors at 7:30 p.m. tonight for a District 4A-4 contest.
The Pirates (2-2 overall, 0-1 in district play) lost last week's district opener 42-16 to the Hilldale Hornets — which came after a Week 3 31-16 setback at the hands of the Gravette (Ark.) Lions.
If there is a silver lining in the clouds from last week's district-opening loss, it's that the Pirates may have solved some of their deficiencies.
“Maybe I'm too optimistic,” Poteau Coach Jeff Broyles said. “I'm looking at two good things. No. 1, we played with them for three quarters. If you take away two long passes, we're there. The other good thing is we for sure know what our weaknesses are. (Assistant) Coach (Andy) Perdue has worked with our secondary, and has made some changes there. As far as the offense, we have to be able to run the ball. We came in Saturday, put our heads together, and we feel like we've come up with something that will help us run the ball. The kids love it. We'll try it this week. We still have to throw the ball, and we have to run the ball — and we feel like we've come up with something that will let us do that. The kids have taken to it. I was watching the film, and we're not too far off, and that's what got us thinking maybe it's the schemes. That's what made us change (offensive) schemes. The kids are eating up — they just love it. The kids are open to the change, and they like the change. They're excited about the change — and I'm really pleased about that.”
