Poteau Pirates look strong in Mena scrimmage; community wide pep rally slated Tuesday night at Costner Stadium

August 30, 2013

MENA, Ark. — In last week's Poteau Pirates' football scrimmage against the Heavener Wolves at Costner Stadium, the Pirates seemed bland and had a case of the blahs. Apparently, that got corrected this past week in practice.
Several factors were at the root of the intensity improvement for the Pirates in Thursday night's scrimmage against the Mena Bearcats. The Pirates are starting to understand the offensive philosophy of Greg Werner, who is entering his second year as coach. Then, too, the addition of senior wideout Kendrick Hardaway gives the Pirates a legitimate deep home-run shot every time he catches the ball. Hardaway has qualified for the state track meet every year. He was mechanically timed in the 40-yard dash at 4.38 seconds. That is in the neighborhood of Jon Bunch, who won the 100-yard dash his senior year, and was elected into the Poteau High School Hall of Fame last summer.
Also, the Pirates have gone up against the big boys in Class 6A in scrimmages the last couple of years, and they held their own against them in the summer leagues. They fear no one, and believe and trust themselves to get the job done. This, too, was the first time Poteau's defense has been at full strength.
