Poteau Pirates split first two games at Midget State Tournament; Pirates play in loser's-bracket quarterfinals tonight

July 12, 2012

ELK CITY — The Poteau Pirates OK Kids Midget baseball team won the 2012 Regional Tournament the hard way last week at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex. If they want to win the state title, they will have to do the same thing this week.
The Pirates lost their opening-round game 11-1 to the Clinton White, but stayed alive Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 nailbiting victory over Tecumseh.
The Pirates will play the loser Thursday night's winner's-bracket semifinal between the Dale real Tree and the Stilwell Indians at 6 p.m. tonight in the loser's-bracket quarterfinals. Poteau must win both games tonight and Saturday night to get to Sunday's state title game, which is slated for 4 p.m. at this point.
In Thursday's win, pitcher Ben Klutts threw a complete-game victory, striking out seven batters in six innings.
Tyler Singleterry's RBI single in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie as he plated Dawson Perry.
Perry scored the game's first run, breaking a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as he scored on Dakota Eaves' RBI double.
For the game, Seth Ryan and Jarred Williams were each 2-for-3, Perry was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Eaves was 1-for-3 with a double and a run batted in for the Pirates.
In Wednesday's loss to Clinton, the Pirates had only one hit, a double by Rece Ward in the fourth inning. He came round and scored Poteau's only run on a passed ball.
