The first real good chance for new Poteau Pirates football coach Greg Werner to get a good look at his new players in a game-like situation will happen this afternoon.
The Poteau Red-White Football Scrimmage will begin at 4 p.m. this afternoon at Costner Stadium. Admission is towels.
The scrimmage was originally going to take place at 6 p.m., but it was going to interfere with tonight's Poteau Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet. So, it was moved up two hours to accommodate tonight's festivities.
Today's scrimmage will gave Werner a good place to start evaluating his players' talents and abilities.
“The main thing is we need some point of evaluation,” he said. “We don't have anything to really go off of yet. I need to get a chance to start evaluating players. We need to desperately move on. We're looking forward to it, and I think the kids will have fun because they like to hit people. They're looking forward to it because afterward they're going to have a week off — so, that will be good for everybody.”
