Three Poteau Pirates senior track athletes, Nico Hall, Trevor Shankle and Troy Barnett, are hoping to make it to one more state meet. If they finish in the top three in their respective events at todayâs Class 5A Regional Meet in Tahlequah, they will do just that. However, if they finish in fourth through sixth place, they can still make state with an at-large bid.
âThis could be my last track meet,â said Hall, who will run in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs as well as some relays. âIâm better at track than anything else. Iâve ran all my life. Iâll be running next year in college [at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith], but to run cross country. My last [high school] race will mean a lot to me.â
âIt would mean a lot to me, especially since weâve moved up to [Class] 5A this year,â said Shankle, who will throw the discus and shot put at todayâs regional meet along with Barnett. âNow, itâs even more important to me. I knew when we moved up that it was going to be a struggle, but that just meant that I was going to have to work even harder to get there.â
âItâs all about your senior year,â Barnett said. âNo matter what you do, you get all your results from your senior year, and itâs how everyone will look at you. Itâs all an image of your senior year. It means the world to anyone to make state your senior year, no matter what. These are my last meets, and I want to give everything I got. Practices is what gets you to state, no matter what the sport.â
