Poteau senior wrestler wins Maverick Conference title; several other matmen place

WAGONER — Poteau's Devin Anderson became the 77th Pirate wrestler to win a Maverick Conference title since 1980 as he won the 120-pound championship Saturday at the 2014 Maverick Conference Tournament, beating Jay's Trestin January in the finals.
As a team, the Pirates were sixth out of 18 teams, with three other wrestlers placing.
Roderick Hornbuckle was third at 145 pounds, Sam Shore (138) and Khy Mote (170) coming in fourth.
Jake Sheehan (160 pounds), Eli Mapes (182), Aaron Hopson (220) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight) all won matches but failed to place.
The Pirates will return to action Thursday night at Greenwood, Ark. The junior high dual will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the high school dual at 7 p.m.
