Perhaps the most misleading statistic about the Poteau-Verdigris Class 4A state quarterfinal game would have to be that the Cardinals, even though they were district champions, came in sporting a 7-7 record. The Cardinals gave the Pirates all they wanted and more.
The Pirates survived 1-0 to advance to tonight's 7 p.m. state semifinals against Oklahoma City Sante Fe South in the capital city. It will be a rematch of last year's state title game, won by Poteau in double overtime.
