If you look at the two teams in Tuesday night’s Class 4A playoff game at Costner Stadium between the Poteau Pirates and the Verdigris Cardinals, it would be a classic mismatch. Coming into the game, the Pirates had scored 86 goals and have only allowed six goals. Verdigris scored 42 goals and allowed 15 goals.
However, the Cardinals were running on adrenaline until midway through the second half. Class 4A’s top-ranked Pirates scored 10 minutes into the final half, and then held off the Cardinals for a 3-2 win.
The Pirates (13-1) will advance to the state quarterfinals and play Oologah on the road at 7 p.m. Friday as the Mustangs blanked Poteau’s district rival Stilwell 5-0 Tuesday night.
