TULSA — Twelve years ago, the majority of players on the Poteau Pirates soccer team started their soccer careers. Their record was perfect. They did did not win a game. However over the years, these young Pirates learned how to play soccer. Then, too, their physical abilities and agilities began to develop, and they started to win games. For the past four years, the Pirates have improved their status one step at a time. This year the Pirates took the final step.
Ashby Clark's goal with 6:44 left in the second 10-minute overtime period not only gave the Pirates their first lead in Saturday night's Class 4A state title match against Oklahoma City Santa Fe South at the University of Tulsa, Clark's goal gave the Pirates the state title as they won the game 4-3.
