After coming in second in each of the last two LeFlore County Tournaments, Scott Nelke, Poteau boys coach, was hoping third time was going to be a charm come the 81st version of the state's longest-running basketball tournament.
Scott Gregory, Poteau's first-year girls coach, believed that his team had yet to play its best game this season.
Both coaches had to be rather pleased, if not ecstatic, about how their respective teams played in Tuesday night's championship quarterfinals at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
For the second time this month, the Poteau Lady Pirates handled the Heavener Lady Wolves in a 73-32 victory.
Then, the Pirates followed suite by routing the Howe Lions 58-30.
Both Poteau teams will play in the championship semifinals in Talihina. The Pirates will meet Talihina at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium, with the winner playing for the championship at 8 p.m. Saturday in Spiro.
The Lady Wolves and Lions played in fifth-place semifinal games on Wednesday with the hopes of making it to the fifth-place games Friday at the Wister High School gym. The girls fifth-place game will be at 4 p.m., followed by the boys fifth-place contest at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Pirates will meet Panama at 7 p.m. Friday in Talihina for the right to play for the title at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Spiro. The loser will play for third place at 1 p.m. Saturday in Spiro.
