Poteau tennis player qualifies for state

May 8, 2013

TULSA — Thanks to one Poteau High School sophomore, there’s now six sports going on this spring.
Poteau sophomore tennis player Skylar Abbott qualified for the Class 4A State Tournament, which will be Friday and Saturday at the Will Rogers Tennis Center in Oklahoma City.
Abbott placed fourth in the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Monday at the Health and Grand Racquet Club.
Abbott opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win to Nowata, and then lost to the top-seeded player, Riverfield’s Zeke Clark, in the regional quarterfinals.
In the consolation semifinals, Abbott defeated Henryetta 6-0, 6-1.
However, due to a shoulder injury suffered in the quarterfinal match against Clark, Abbott had to forfeit his consolation finals to Sallisaw, which dropped Abbott into a fourth-place finish — still qualifying him for state this weekend.
