Poteau trio, Talihina wrestler place at Sallisaw Tournament; Pirate matman wins title at 132 pounds

January 24, 2012

TYLER TUSTIN

SALLISAW — Four local wrestlers placed in this past weekend's Sallisaw Tournament.
Poteau's Tyler Tustin won the title at 132 pounds, while teammates Devin Anderson (113 pounds) was third and Gabe Sanchez (182) was fourth.
“We had a brutal consolation semifinal round,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “We just didn't perform that good. We just have to make a better attempt to get to the consolation finals.”
As a team, the Pirates were sixth.
We're heading in the right direction,” Barbee said. “We beat some good teams, like Fort Gibson and Stilwell. We're winning matches, but it's just that we need to win the right matches. We had a lot of our wrestlers who just missed placing by one match. Had that happened, we would have probably been fifth — and we wouldn't have been that far from being fourth, third or second.”
One Talihina Golden Tiger also placed in the two-day tournament as Dylan Chancellor was fourth at 195 pounds.
Both county wrestling squads will return to action tonight. The Pirates will be in a scheduled triangular with Liberty at Keys (Park Hill) beginning at 6 p.m., but Barbee said there is a chance that Liberty may not participate.
The Golden Tigers will wrestle in their final dual of this season's Class 2A District Duals as they will meet Hulbert at 7 p.m. tonight in Hulbert.
