MIAMI, Okla. â€” Poteau High School wrestler Tyler Tustin won the title at 138 pounds at this past weekend's Miami Tournament. Tustin, the two-time Class 4A individual state champion at his weight class, beat Jay's two-time state qualifier 12-6, then defeated Jeff Bizzle of Bentonville, Ark., who was third in his respective state tournament last season, by a score of 3-2 and ended the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Miami's returning Class 5A state qualifier.
Tustin was one of six wrestlers who were either first or second in their pool play bracket in their weight class on Friday. Besides Tustin, Devin Anderson (120 pounds) and Derek Francis (170) won their bracket, while Sam Shore (132), Kyle Kingrey (160) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight) were second.
In consolation brackets, Khy Mote (182 pounds) and Gabe Sanchez (195) won consolation titles by each winning three straight matches to end the tournament on a high note.
As a team, the Pirates were 10th out of 17 teams, which included six schools each from Classes 6A and 5A.
The Pirates will return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday in their home-opening dual against Quinton at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
