TYLER TUSTIN

STILWELL — Poteau wrestler Tyler Tustin won the 138-pound title at last weekend’s Maverick Conference Tournament. Tustin, who got a first-round bye, beat Wagoner’s Bryan Drake by a 14-0 major decision in the semfinals and defeated Sallisaw’s Gabe Taylor 3-1 in the finals.
All total, seven Pirates medaled. Derek Francis (170 pounds) came in second after losing in the finals to Sallisaw’s Cale Wilson.
Devin Anderson (120 pounds) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight) were third. Kyle Kingrey (160 pounds), Khy Mote (182) and Gabe Sanchez (195) all placed fourth.
As a team, the Pirates were fifth, coming in behind conference champion Wagoner, Vian, Jay and Sallisaw. Talihina, which did not have any wrestlers place, finished 13th in the team standings.
Six Poteau junior high wrestlers placed in the event, all coming in third place — Bryson Terry (80 pounds), Race Williams (89), Sam Shore (132), Roderick Hornbuckle (140), Connor Williams (150) and Dale Wright (heavyweight). As a team, the Raiders were fifth.
The Pirates will return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday as they will welcome former coach, Chris Barbee, and his Stilwell Indians to Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse for a dual.
The Golden Tigers will be idle until participating in the All-City Tournament on Feb. 9 in McLoud.
