Poteau wrestler wins title at Weatherford Tournament; Pirates finish seventh in team standings

December 20, 2011

WEATHERFORD — Poteau's Tyler Tustin won the 132-pound title at last weekend's Weatherford Tournament.
As a team, the Pirates were seventh.
Besides Tustin, five other Pirates placed in the two-day event. Devin Anderson was third at 113 pounds, Tanner Sanders (145 pounds) and Derek Francis (170) were fourth, Kyle Kingery was fifth at 160 pounds and Chevy Galetka was sixth at 182 pounds.
“We didn't wrestle too bad,” Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “I think the big trip out west took its toll on us about halfway through Saturday. We should have had three more wrestlers place, but they didn't win their matches in the medal round. There's just some techniques we have to work on so that we can win those matches in future tournaments. That was one of the reasons we took this trip. The guys responded well to begin the trip with (dual) wins over Blanchard and Newcastle, and we competed well throughout the trip.”
The Pirates will not return to action until 5 p.m. Jan. 3, 2012, when they will be in a triangular with Sequoyah-Tahlequah at Vian.
