Poteau wrestlers beat Wagoner, lose to Sallisaw in Class 4A District Duals

January 21, 2012

WAGONER — It was a good news, bad news scenario for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team at the Class 4 District Duals on Thursday.
The Pirates pulled off a 39-36 victory over the host Bulldogs, but they lost 49-21 to the Black Diamonds — who also beat the ’Dogs 42-27.
The fourth team in the Class 4A District Duals, the Fort Gibson Tigers, did not participate in Thursday's action because they are all dualing the other three teams in regular-season duals — all of which will go toward the district duals.
When the Black Diamonds wrestled the Tigers for their homecoming on Jan. 3, they won 51-23. Thus, Sallisaw won the Class 4A District Duals and will be at next month's Class 4A Dual State Tournament.
Against the Bulldogs, the Pirates (14-6) got pins from Kaydon Evans (138 pounds), Trevin Smith (170), Gabe Sanchez (182) and Hank Galetka (195), an 8-2 decision by Tyler Tustin at 132 pounds and forfeits by Luis Gonzalez (220) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight).
“It was a great win for us,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “It was just a real good team effort. We didn't give up many bonus points (pins and forfeits). Our hard work finally came to fruition, and it's a credit to the kids.”
However, the Pirates could not do as successful with the Black Diamonds. Poteau only won four matches. Tustin (132 pounds) and Derek Francis (160) won by pinfalls, Evans won a 12-8 decision at 138 pounds and Gonzalez won by forfeit (220).
“We just don't match up as well with Sallisaw,” Barbee said. “I think we ran out of gas when we faced them.”
The Pirates, as well as the Talihina Golden Tigers, will be in the Sallisaw Tournament, which began on Friday and will end today.
